Common conditions include:

The most common skincare problem seen by Doctors with 20% of Canadians known to experience acne, according to the Canadian Dermatology Association. It is caused by blockages of the skin’s pores due to factors such as bacteria, oil secretions or hormonal changes. This can lead to whiteheads, blackheads or pimples that become swollen or inflamed on areas like the face, chest or shoulders. An online dermatologist can carry out an assessment of the condition to provide guidance and possible treatment options.
Impacting approximately 17% of Canadians, eczema causes itchy inflammation of the skin. It is commonly found on the elbows, knees, face or hands. Professional dermatology treatment can help alleviate any painful itching and prevent infections from occurring through a combination of medications and treatment options.
1 million Canadians suffer with this non-contagious skin condition. It is characterized by inflamed, itchy and painful skin lesions covered in white or silvery scales. An online dermatologist can assess which treatment therapies are most appropriate depending on individual needs, with the aim of improving patient comfort and quality of life.
Alopecia can be caused by several factors including stress, diet, thyroid diseases or family history and it impacts 1-2% of the Canadian population. It can be determined by the loss of more than 100 hairs a day and a noticeable lack of hairs growing back to replace them. Certain medications have proven to be effective in treating hair loss and a dermatologist can advise and prescribe as part of a controlled treatment plan.
This typically short-lived range of skin infections are itchy and often noticeable through changes to the skin such as cracking or peeling. They cover common conditions such as athlete’s foot, which affects 1 in 10 people in North America, yeast infections and ringworm. Dermatologist treatment could include recommendations on lifestyle changes as well as medication and skin care guidance.
If you often produce more sweat than necessary, you may have a condition called Hyperhidrosis. In Canada, this impacts roughly 3% of people and can have a negative impact through causing social embarrassment or hindering productivity. An online dermatologist can determine the best treatment option for your individual situation.

How do online dermatologists diagnose skin conditions?

Many of the most common conditions can easily be diagnosed by a trained dermatologist through a visual examination. The online dermatologist will need to discuss your symptoms and rely on photos of video close-ups to show them problem areas. If more in-depth diagnostic methods are required, such as a patch test for allergies, or a biopsy which involves taking a sample from the target area, then an in-person visit may be better.

How do I prepare for my online dermatologist appointment?

To ensure the dermatologist can provide an accurate diagnosis during your appointment you can help by noting down any concerns and answers in advance. Considerations include when the problem first appeared, if you are aware of what may have caused it, anything that helps improve the issue and key descriptive details. If the issue is in a hard to reach area or somewhere that may be difficult to show on video then you may wish to ask a friend or family member to take detailed photos in advance of the appointment that you can share with the online dermatologist.

What will my online dermatologist appointment be like?

Appointments usually take between five to thirty minutes depending on the individual need. The online dermatologist will ask for a description of your symptoms and reason for the appointment. This will allow the dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment. If necessary, they may recommend a follow-up appointment or a visit to a physical clinic.

What if my area of concern is in a location that I do not want to share on video?

If you do not feel comfortable or are unable to show the online dermatologist the problem area during the video appointment, then you can take detailed photos ahead of time and share them with the dermatologist.

When should I choose an in-person appointment instead?

If you are experiencing severe and persistent symptoms that would be best examined in a physical appointment, then you should book an in-clinic dermatology appointment. Symptoms could be:

  • Rash on the genitals or mouth
  • Fever
  • Dark bruising
  • A mole that has changed appearance
